70

What is seventy suppose to feel like? Aches and pains- sure I have them but I think everyone has some sort of one or the other.

Memory going- that makes me laugh. My memory is great for remembering stuff I did when I was young, dumb things I wish I never did. Now, that stupid grocery list- I never know where I put it. Gabe keeps telling me I need to put the list on my phone. Right- I seem to leave the phone in the car or at home when I shop. So much for that idea.

I've been reading articles on Flipboard ( excellent site) and one keeps popping up about how walking is great for "older" people. It's suppose to keep dementia away. If this is true then hopefully I'm doing something right.

Gabe walks every morning first. He takes Max out at 4:15 then does 2 miles. That's 4:15 AM.  No way am I going to get up at that hour! I get up at 5 and we are out of the house at 5:45.

We meet up with other old people. Sharon and Don- Sharon is 82 and Don is 91. Mey is almost 70. Laurie- is a young lady who also walks with us, Around we go for our 2 miles stroll and  Gabe's 2 additional miles.

Oh- btw, we walk 365 days. Rain, heat- we are out.

What do you talk about that hour of the morning? I've been up and on the computer and remember the good stuff ( guess there really is something to this walking huh). Mey always has something to tell us about her hubby plus by the time we walk she has already had a pot of coffee!!

Since Gabe has had breakfast he use to get ready to go diving but THANK GOD he no longer dives. He gave all his equipment away and now is into biking.

Since I'm intermittent fasting I can't eat until 8. Sometimes I hit the grocery stores early and other times I just hang out on the computer but after I eat that's when my day starts.

I love the gym. I have my little routine. I do elliptical for 30 minutes with a 5 min cool down ( which I don't do as a cool down). Then onto the stationary bike. This is where the fun begins. I have favorite tunes on my phone ( would never forget my phone for the gym- priorities you know). Intensity points for a 70 year old is 150 minutes. I'm not that fit to get that in one day but I have gotten it down to three days. I ride that stationary bike like the devil has come down from Georgia- LOL. There is one thing that maybe does come from age. I can't stand if someone else is on MY favorite bike!! Planet Fitness has 6 stationary bikes, the other six are recumbent which I don't like. Then if someone gets on the bike next to me ( which they aren't suppose to due to covid) I cut my workout short. Most people are not vaccinated  in this area and do not want to take a chance.

Now, when I'm done I do a tiny bit of socializing then off to either home or Aldi. Aldi doesn't open early so that's my after gym shopping.

When I get home Gabe is usually back from his ride ( he does between 26 and 30 miles a day) and that's it for him. He hangs out and usually takes a nap. The wife - no. If it's nice, I'm outside weeding or planting. If the the weather is crappy then I bake or looking for new recipes.

How's this for someone who hasn't turned 70 until today?

I wonder now that I am 70 will I slow down? God willing and if the creek don't rise I pray both Gabe and I stay healthy and happy for a very long time 💓💓

BIZARRE THINGS PEOPLE BELIEVED 50 YEARS AGO

It is true that the 1960s were full of crazy ideas and ignorant (or maybe just innocent) people who actually believed those crazy ideas.

This is a cool Article

A radiator in a Victorian house with a built in plate warmer

These would be found in a butler's pantry or tearoom; the scullery had plenty of other ways to keep dishes (post-plating) warm. But after coming up the dumbwaiter, the more "front of house" serving staff was expected to keep food presentable and to distribute it as quickly as possible according to social norms (ladies first, guests, men by status (title-age)-host.) Typical temperature of 170 to 200 F, and totally benign heat that will not add or subtract moisture.

They are now used to proof dough.

Injuries that are disproportionately frequent.

In Florida, you are only required to wear eye protection instead of a helmet to legally operate a motorcycle.

Blind owner Michael Hingson with his guide dog Roselle

Roselle led him and 30 others down 78 stories out of the World Trade Center on 9/11.

Roselle was asleep under her owner's desk on the 78th floor in Tower 1 of the World Trade Center when the attack commenced. She was awakened by the plane impacting some fifteen floors above them. Roselle calmly helped Hingson to stairwell B, despite the smoke, confusion and noise surrounding her.

She led her owner and 30 other people down 1,463 steps out of the tower. After descending over half the distance, they passed the firemen who were heading up, who Roselle stopped to greet. The descent took just over an hour. Just after they exited the tower, Tower 2 collapsed, sending debris flying. Hingson later said, "While everyone ran in panic, Roselle remained totally focused on her job, while debris fell around us, and even hit us, Roselle stayed calm." Once clear, Roselle led her owner to the safety of a subway station, where they helped a woman who had been blinded by falling debris. Once they arrived home, Roselle immediately began playing with her retired guide dog predecessor, Linnie, as if nothing important had happened.

Roselle was the last form of unconditional love those firefighters experienced before the towers fell.

Katherine Johnson

Today is Katherine Johnson's  100th birthday. Do you know who she is?  Did you watch the Hidden Figures movie?

Katherine is an amazing lady.  She graduated college at 18 in 1937. Think about that. The very first female and one of only 3 African Americans to enter into the graduate program at her college. Think of how incredibly hard it must have been to find a job as a black woman back then.  NACA was still segregated when she took a job there. Think of all the adversity this amazing woman had to over come, and all the history she helped write, and she did it all including having a family.

One of few women to get men to ask for directions.

For her services she was awarded the highest civilian award of the United States, The Presidential Medal Of Freedom

How deep the ocean really is

The coolest analogy I have heard is that the trench is roughly as deep as a commercial airliner flies high. That gives you some perspective.

Bathyscaphe Trieste

Trieste is a Swiss-designed, Italian-built deep-diving research bathyscaphe, which with its crew of two reached a record maximum depth of about 10,911 metres (35,797 ft), in the deepest known part of the Earth's oceans, the Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench near Guam in the Pacific. On 23 January 1960, Jacques Piccard (son of the boat's designer Auguste Piccard) and US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh achieved the goal of Project Nekton.

Trieste was the first manned vessel to have reached the bottom of the Challenger Deep.

Because its almost Summer

You also shouldn’t give them ice cold water, sips of cool water. Ice cold water or other beverages can go from nausea to vomiting, and then you are losing even more valuable body fluids. Ideally you want rehydration solutions, Gatorade cut with water, or water and some crackers. You NEED to get sodium in there

Where cinnamon comes from

There are a few different varieties that are "cinnamon." The stuff we get in the US normally is from those thicker, smaller curls (cassia). The stuff in the Video looks more like the "hotter" Vietnamese type (sometimes called "Ceylon" or "true" cinnamon).

The sticks you buy in stores is just cinnamon oil mixed with sawdust, then pressed into shape. Real cinnamon bark is flaky.

Many in the US call it 'Mexican cinnamon' because Ceylon is used primarily for Mexican food while cassia (the cheap stuff) is used for basic cinnamon needs in the US.

Cassia is very strong and spicy, it isn't fake cinnamon. It's still part of the cinnamon family. It's just cheaper and easier to harvest. Ceylon is more delicate and mildly sweet, far better tasting

Hawaiian Day Octopus striking a pose

Photographer of the above  comment:

I have photographed the Hawaiian daytime octopus on multiple occasions and have never seen anything like this. I was lucky enough to intercept this one as it was shooting across the shallows from one patch of reef to another. although it did not ink, after a quick dart to its left, it halted and took flower shape. I can only assume this was in attempts to intimidate me. the interaction only lasted a couple of seconds before it went to blend in with the reef, leaving me amazed.

They communicate via color change and also use it to imitate other creatures to for example look more threatening to a potential predator.

All octopi are beautiful. They're probably the closest things we have to aliens living in our biosphere. They have 3 hearts (2 for their gills and one for the rest of the body), over 200 suction cups in each limb, a ring-shaped main brain, and blue blood. Also, each of their 8 arms have a little bit of brain in them so they can explore independently from each other, and even function if they're separated!
They're also fiercely intelligent, can jet-propel themselves, and change the color and texture of their body to seamlessly integrate into their environment!

Nothing beats seeing an octopus up close, whether in an aquarium or in the wild, and being able to witness their otherworldly movements, appearance, and behaviors!

Robins have tiny feathers around their eyes

The feathers  are called Rictal bristles. They can feel the prey's movement better, like a cat's whiskers. Like a touch sensor thingie. If the bug is trying to escape from the side of the beak, the bird senses it with those and it can do something to eat it properly.

Golden Pheasant

Male Golden Pheasants can be easily identified by their bright coloring. They have a golden crest tipped with red which extends from the top of their heads, down their necks. They have bright red underparts, dark colored wings and a pale brown, long, barred tail. Their rumps are also golden, upper backs are green and they have bright yellow eyes with a small black pupil. Their face, throat and chin are a rust color and their wattles and orbital skin are yellow. Beak, legs and feet are also yellow.

Female Golden Pheasants are less colorful and more duller than males. They have a mottled brown plumage, pale brown face, throat, breast and sides, pale yellow feet and are more slender in appearance.

Cheese Puff

Meet this "Cheese" fish, also known as Guineafowl puffer.

This is what it looks like in the Ocean

I really hope that whoever caught it will return it to it's home.

Orcanised Crime....

Amazing Stuff. Kind of backs up why they are referred to as "the wolves of the sea". Just like wolves they are intelligent enough to know that they have more to gain by working with humans rather than trying to eat us.

They're the biggest of the oceanic dolphins, and each pod is a little community.

I just learned from the article that their language is so advanced that they have regional dialects. Accents, slightly varied vocalizations based on location, just like us! Most animals just make the sound they make, but not these amazing mammals. They (and other large marine mammals) are far more intelligent than most people give them credit for.

It's hard to put into perspective

How good some people can still be.

So much happiness into a family's life for only about $300 (for a theatrical costume) and some spare time. I hope this motivates some other people to do the same. There are 213 Children's Hospitals in the United States. Wouldn't it be awesome if other people could get a super hero into every one of these hospitals once a year?
