Novice Quilter- Part 3

I made my first quilt with the help of Nancy and Stephanie at the senior center. The  quilt is yours to keep and other quilts that are made at the center are donated back to the senior center.

This quilt was very different from my first one. I quilted around the spiders and spiderman. I also had to hand sew  on the binding . The quilt was made for someone's grandson and I'm concerned that since the binding was hand sewed it won't hold and mentioned when I gave it to  her that someone should machine the binding to make it stronger. If it happens the quilt will last, if not well all the hours I put into it I'm afraid will be for naught.

It was a learning curve making this one. I prefer making the other one but now I know how to do both.

This was setting the quilt up to pin

Once pinned I outlined each spider man

Once all the spidermen were outlined I did the "spiders" in the blue circle. I was going to do the spiders inside but it really didn't look that good so I pulled them out.

I wanted to finish it before we went home and this is the final quilt.

  1. WOW Linda, I am so impressed !! This is awesome. I can't even imagine having the patience to do this. Did you sew it by hand?? This is just so amazing to me. You are truly talented in many many things.

    1. All by hand which worries me. It's going to a 7 year old plus you know it has to be washed. Not sure if the hand stitches will hold up

    2. I am sure it will hold up fine. I can't imagine doing all those stitches by hand. I have a hard time holding a needle to sew a button on. How do your eyes hold up with all that close work?? I am in AWE !!!!

  2. Linda...you're AMAZING! All that hand sewing...I can't imagine it. I'm one that leans on my sewing machine for a lot...although I still hand sew a hem. That quilt is gonna be well loved by that little boy that's for sure. And you'd be surprised how well hand sewing holds up in the wash...a lot of times better than something done on a sewing machine.

Bravo to you! I'm so glad you're enjoying quilting...you inspire me!

    1. It was a challenge for sure. Someone was going to machine the binding but that didn't happen. Like I said if it holds great if not well I did the best I could with limited experience.

  3. Linda you did an amazing job on this. If your using quilters thread to sew this , I'm sure it will hold up. It is a nice heavy thread. I bet this 7 yr old will love this. Hand quilting takes longer but its very soothing and relaxing to work on when your just sitting in the evenings. I'm proud of your acomplishments Linda. Very PROUD!!

    1. Dottie- I have NO idea if the thread I used was quilters. I used what they gave me.

      Do you quilt?

  4. Yes I have done quilts. Quilters thread is harder to break. I forget the ply it is,or is that called guage. When you go to the sewing place like JoAn Frabics check it out. I don't quilt anymore. Its to hard on my hands and eyes.

    1. It's very hard on the eyes. I'm lucky in Florida that I have a room with wonderful sunlight.
