This Giving Tree

is not the book by Shel Silverstein but I bet he would of loved this idea.
The Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is a gift that keeps on giving.

Want to know what happened to last year's 76 foot tall, 12 ton Norway Spruce?

It had an even better second act:
It was turned into lumber and used by Habitat for Humanity to build a home in Connecticut for a Marine vet and his family. They are expected to be moved in just in time to open presents under their own Christmas tree.

This is the 8th consecutive year the Rockefeller tree has been turned into a home by Habitat For Humanity.

I also found another article on the first tree in Rockefeller Center.

Note: I don't remember the year I took the photo of the tree. I use to go into the city every December to see it.

  1. How wonderful that they put that beautiful tree in Rockefeller Center to good use after Christmas.....I hope Boston does something similar with theirs in Copley Plaza.

    1. It was my Christmas gift to myself. I always went in by myself and sometimes stayed overnight at Mary's.

You know she is next to Washington Square park and when I looked out her window would see the tree in the park, What a view!

  3. How wonderful that the tree was used this way. To pay it forward & brighten someone's future was a blessing they'll cherish each year.

  5. I've always felt badly that a tree growing for so many years had to be cut down each year for a short Xmas season. How refreshing to hear that it was put to good use afterwards.

  6. Oh I ALWAYS felt the same way. We had an artificial tree for years, then I felt sorry for the trees that weren't brought home and decorated.

Love the idea that the tree will around for many many years.
