This Giving Tree
is not the book by Shel Silverstein but I bet he would of loved this idea.
The Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is a gift that keeps on giving.
Want to know what happened to last year's 76 foot tall, 12 ton Norway Spruce?
It had an even better second act:
It was turned into lumber and used by Habitat for Humanity to build a home in Connecticut for a Marine vet and his family. They are expected to be moved in just in time to open presents under their own Christmas tree.
This is the 8th consecutive year the Rockefeller tree has been turned into a home by Habitat For Humanity.
I also found another article on the first tree in Rockefeller Center.
Note: I don't remember the year I took the photo of the tree. I use to go into the city every December to see it.

How wonderful that they put that beautiful tree in Rockefeller Center to good use after Christmas.....I hope Boston does something similar with theirs in Copley Plaza.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great photo Linda....I bet it was fun to go into the city and look at all the glorious decorations.......
It was my Christmas gift to myself. I always went in by myself and sometimes stayed overnight at Mary's.
DeleteYou know she is next to Washington Square park and when I looked out her window would see the tree in the park, What a view!
What a great way to reuse the tree. I would love to see the family who is moving into the house. AWESOME ! I bet this is a well missed trip for you Linda........You loved to go into the city.
ReplyDeleteI sure do Myra.
DeleteHow wonderful that the tree was used this way. To pay it forward & brighten someone's future was a blessing they'll cherish each year.
ReplyDeleteLove sharing stories like this.
DeleteI never knew that they recycled the tree this way. This made me so happy to read this story.
ReplyDeleteYou never know what you will learn on the blog Dottie!
DeleteI've always felt badly that a tree growing for so many years had to be cut down each year for a short Xmas season. How refreshing to hear that it was put to good use afterwards.
ReplyDeleteOh I ALWAYS felt the same way. We had an artificial tree for years, then I felt sorry for the trees that weren't brought home and decorated.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea that the tree will around for many many years.
