11 Jobs That No Longer Exist

Tom Sherry was our milkman. Milk came in glass bottles and was placed in a little box outside our door everyday.

List of jobs that are no longer around.

  1. I remember the milk man too-he used to come 2 times a week to our house. That glass milk bottle full of milk with the thick layer of cream on the top that he left in the silver metal box on the front porch.....nothin like it.

Well now, I can see why some of those jobs don't exist any more. That human alarm clock was something-that lady looked like she meant BUSINESS! :) And the radar listeners-wow were those some contraptions.

Can you imagine going down in the sewers with a shotgun rat hunting? I sure can't........

A ressurectionist-yikes I'd be having nightmares doing that job.

That last photo in the factory is something-all of the men working look alike-my gosh they all have the same mustache-even the reader! Must have been the in thing back in that day.

What an interesting post, Linda..........I learned something new today-some of those jobs I'd never heard of.

    1. My grandmother use to Bowl at the VFW. They had a guy who use to set up the pins and at the end of the game the ladies got money together to tip him.

  2. O my goodness, when I first saw the title of this, I thought oh like the milkman and the fuller brush man. Never did I expect to see the jobs that are not around anymore. Wow, who can believe they had jobs like that. Can't imagine being woken up by someone tapping on my window. And the rat catchers....ugh what a job. I am with Carol, what a lot of things I learned from this today, and I must say, I am glad I wasn't around in those times.

  4. I remember the glass bottles too, but by the time my dad was a milkman they were in cartons. We used to get up early with him and run the milk etc. in to the boxes. He tried a lot of jobs, Singer repair man that made house calls, and even a garbage man. You don't see them anymore either, just the guy that drives the truck.

    1. Paddi - we still have garbage guys in this area and back home. We have to leave the garbage at the curb down here and the guy picks up the can and adds it to the truck. At home they drive into your yard and take your garbage from where ever you ask them to pick it up.

  5. Wow some of those I never heard of. Makes you wonder now if some of the Cadavers they are using or used were related to us in some way. So sad that they dug up others loved ones. The Milkman I can remember and I remember hearing the Song The Old Lamplighter. Paddi we also have the Garbage Trucks here. One drives sometimes you see two picking up . One from each side of the street. My Granddaugher came at night one time and tapped on my bedroom window and was snickering and I didn't know who it was and it scared me. She was lucky Larry didn't have the gun in hand. We both thought it was someone trying to scare us. Or trying to break in. Linda I think I am going to send Larry out this summer to put his head close to the Ants when they come up and see if he can hear what you hear. Then sit back and laugh my behind off. I won't tell him what he is listening for until after he gets up and asks what he was down there for. Is that like sending our kids out to go snipe hunting with a paper bad and net at night?
