Scarlett's Amish Sugar Cookies

Scarlett's recipe made my "boys" very happy.

Scarlett lives in Florida, and I hope when we go back I'm able to meet her and thank her in person for this wonderful recipe.

Amish Sugar Cookies

1 cup cooking oil
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

4 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon salt

8 tablespoons sugar ( to roll cookies in)

Mix the first six ingredients together and mix well. Fold in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar.

Put in the fridge 45 minutes, I left it overnight .

Take out of fridge and roll dough into balls the size of a walnut. Roll the balls in sugar.
Flatten and place on a ungreased cookie sheet.

Place in a preheated 350 oven.

Bake for 10 minutes.

  1. Boy do those look good-you've got the touch, Linda-your cookies always look so perfect.

And that sure is one group of happy guys! Now all they have to do (by the looks of the last photo) is learn how to share. :)

Robin makes Amish Sugar Cookies and they're always a hit-her recipe is a little different than Scarlett's-I'll have to pass this one along to her.

Thanks Linda-and thank you to Scarlett too!

  3. What a happy group of boys, and a great looking cookie...you must have a cookie smell coming from the house, and the boys just follow the road to the door !! Never ever when I bake, did any of my cookies look like that or even close. You have a magical touch. I can smell them through the screen...

  4. Morning Ladies, They loved them as you can tell by the last photo. I didn't want them to fill up on sugar and gave Jake a bag to bring home. He's such a cutie and I can't resist when he asks for more. Poor kid, as soon as he had the bag in his hand the older boys were all over him. I told them that the cookies were for later but as you can see they never made it home.
Lesson 1- no more cookies to go home! I'll bring them over to their house and give them to Jake's Mom. Problem solved.

    1. Scarlett- I told them they had to sit for a picture before I would give them another cookie. You never saw kids sit SO fast!

  6. The cookies look delicious! I was thinking that maybe coconut oil could be used for the oil. I'd like to try this. Found you on Tuesdays with a Twist.

    1. Cyndy- Thanks. A father of one of the boys hinted about the cookies-LOL! He said how much his son loves all the cookies he's eaten and said I should open a bake shop. I told him I'm to old for that but there there will be always be cookies in our home for the boys.

True Story- Gabe's grandmother would make candy ( sound familiar). She lived in Montreal. The kids on the block would come over all the time to get candy. She was famous for her maple candy. Guess in a way I'm carrying on the tradition.

  8. How would it e to substitute the oil with applesauce? This recipe looks delicious... and by the look on the boy's faces, I think I'm right!
