March Books

The Shadow of the Wind- Recommended by a FB book group.  It's an ode to the art of reading, but it is also the perfect example of the all-encompassing power of a well-told story. At the first light of dawn in postwar Barcelona, a bookseller leads his motherless son to a mysterious crypt called the Cemetery of Forgotten Books.

Taking Paris: The Epic Battle for the City of Lights-  It's a behind-the-scenes look, and one gets a feeling that we could actually be in the room when history is made. Highly recommended for those interested in our history.

Sisters of Night and Fog: A WWII Novel- Amazing book. The story alternates between Virginia d'Albert-Lake who was an American married to a French citizen. Violetta Szabo had a french mother and a British father.

The Giant Killer: The incredible true story of the smallest man to serve in the U.S. Military—Vietnam veteran Green Beret Captain Richard J. Flaherty - Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, & 2 Purple Hearts.-This book is absolutely phenomenal. It's such an unbelievable story, and worth every bit of your time. So many men, with similar experiences are o overlooked everyday. This author has done an amazing job honoring his friend, and his promise, and recounting the extraordinary life of Richard "The Giant Killer" Flaherty.

Pippo and Clara-Italy, 1938. Mussolini is in power and war is not far away . . .

Clara and Pippo are just children: quiet, thoughtful Clara is the older sister; Pippo, the younger brother, is forever chatting. The family has only recently arrived in the city carrying their few possessions.

When Mamma goes missing early one morning, both Clara and Pippo go in search of her. Clara turns right; Pippo left.

As a result of the choices they make that morning, their lives will be changed forever.

  1. Linda, I always like to see what books you have read. My reading these days, is mostly on the light side. There is so much going on in the world, that I need to have light reading. The books you have read look like they are very interesting. One of these days, I will look them up and read. Thanks for the reports, I keep them all in a file.

    1. I guess because of the Ukraine War I kinda wanted to read about how others handled war.

Sisters of The Night was amazing. I never knew about those woman. Such courage.

The Giant Killer- Mr. Flaherty wasn't even 5 foot tall and became a Green Beret. After Vietnam the military " downsized" and he was no longer a member of any part of the military. He had a few jobs but became homeless. Lived in Florida around the Tampa area. If the police office hadn't befriended him no one would of ever know what a life he had. Another amazing person

Pippo and Clara I waited till the very last minute to read before I had to return it and once I started I could not put it down. I think of all the poor kids in the Ukraine, my heart goes out to them.

I need to get back to my cozy food mysteries!!!

    2. I just read a book on Kindle that had lots of recipes and was about dogs too. I thought of you. It wasn't a mystery, but was really cute. It was called Summer of Second Chances. By Andrea Hurst. You can look it up.

    4. I got it for free on my Kindle. I never used to like reading on my Kindle, but I am getting used to it. I get emails from Book Bub everyday, and there are always a couple of free ones on there. The other ones are not too expensive either.
