I started taking yoga classes at the Life Style Enrichment Center and noticed the schedule included a quilting class. Quilting? Someone who never sewed anything her whole life! Something to contemplate.
Sewing has never been my forte. I love to cook but sewing, no way. I would send anything that needed repair to Gabe's mother who is a wiz with a needle. When they moved to Canada I would send anything that needed mending to her.
Gabe has strongly encouraged me to get out of the house. He wants to me try different things. The chair yoga was the first new adventure. Maybe quilting would work for me.
My first step was to pick out material. Once I decided what I wanted Stephanie( my instructor) cut squares from the difficult decision on what material I wanted in the quilt .
Once the squares were cut I positioned them to the pattern I wanted to make.
Nancy ( another instructor) had the chore of showing me the next step in creating the quilt.
Placed the squares facing each other and measured 1/4 of an inch on each square. Hand sewed the squares to make a row of six. They do not allow you to use a sewing machine. Everything on the quilt has to be done by hand.
The quilt will have seven rows down and 6 across. That's the plan so far.
Note: I enjoyed this step except the ironing, which isn't my thing. I added a towel to the coffee table and used that as my ironing board.
Linda, this is awesome. I am so proud of you. This is a great project for you, since you love quilts. I can't imagine sewing all those squares by hand tho. Looking forward to seeing the finished project. You go GIRL !!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know how long I have been going to quilt shows. I drag Gabe and Max along with me and now Gabe is telling his friends- my wife made a quilt!
DeleteLinda I am so happy for you. Quilting is a wonderful thing to do. I can just picture you sitting in the evening sewing those squares
ReplyDeleteI'm so lucky to get strong sunlight in the room I like to quilt. Makes it so much easier on the old eyes!
DeleteThat looks AWESOME Linda! You're doing a great job on that quilt. That's something I've never done and want to some day. I have loads of instruction books and fabric enough to open a fabric store from back in the day when I used to make all of Robin's clothes. If you lived next door, I'd keep you supplied in more fabric than you knew what to do with....and you'd get me started on quilting.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't that be fun? We'd be busy busy busy-but I'm afraid I'd cheat and use the sewing machine. Hats off to you for all that hand sewing, girlfriend! :)
I'd use the sewing machine too Carol! I always poke myself when I sew by hand
DeleteI have to hand sew otherwise I can't take the class or use any of their supplies. Honest, I don't know the first thing about sewing machines!
DeleteWay to go Linda. I hate ironing but it's a no win for me. If I don't, i'm wrinkled because I LOVE cotton and it's always wrinkled~ How's the progress?
ReplyDeleteIt's DONE! Someone in my class said now I can make quilts for my family. I told them I have three very close friends that are my 'sisters' and I'll be working on quilts for them!
