Kumquat Salsa

I didn't know what a kumquat was until a few months ago. A neighbor in Florida trimmed her kumquat tree and left the branches on the side of the road for the garbage man to dispose of.

I picked a few off the branches and asked Marie what they were. Kumquat. Never heard of it and wanted to give it a try.

Pinterest to the rescue! Found this recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups kumquats (chopped and seeded)
1⁄2 cup red onion (finely chopped)
1⁄3 cup cilantro (chopped)
3 T oil ( used olive oil)
1⁄2 cup yellow bell pepper (chopped)
1⁄4 tsp. red pepper flakes ( used 2 small habanero peppers- seeded and chopped)
Fresh  lime juice to taste

Directions:

Combine chopped produce items with oil and lime juice- stir.

Add the habaneros and mix until you achieve a desired spice level

Let sit for 30 minutes or overnight to let the flavors blend.

  1. I've never tasted a kumquat....do they taste like some other kind of fruit? I love fruit salsas......and you can't get much fresher than fruit picked right off the tree. One would have thought your neighbor would have taken the fruit off the branches before she gave them a heave-ho.....oh well....all the better for you! :)

    1. I went over to her house when she got home from work and told her I picked off the fruit. She said that she hoped someone would see it and maybe take it. Little did she know Miz Linda was in the neighborhood!

  3. I always thought the kumquat was part of the orange family. I might have had one a long time ago. Leave it to Linda to find a recipe to use it for. This looks very tempting.

  4. Though I've heard of kumquats I don't think I have ever tasted one. Lucky you to get freebies and to come up with a delish salsa!
If & when I get to the grocery store I'll have to look for some. Won't be adding it to my list as for sure it would drive Ray around the bend! He hates looking for strange and foreign items! LOL
