Weeki Wachee

Ted, who is a close friend and a member of KUR ( Karst Underwater Reserch) did a 8 hours dive on Saturday. It was suppose to be 10 hours but his dive buddy was having problems with the oxygen and had to call the dive at 8 hours.

Gabe wanted to see Ted off before he started his dive and Weeki Wachee is 5 minutes from the site Ted was exploring.

Weeki Wachee is a beautiful spring which is now owned by the state of Florida. It was once owned by ABC which they heavily promoted. They also built the theater which is embedded on the side of the spring  16 feet below the surface. The theater has 500 seats.

In it's heyday Weeki Wachee  mermaids performed eight shows a day to sold out crowds. Half a million people a year came to see the mermaids.

It's sad to see the condition it is in now. The theater needs to be updated and the rest of the park is in disrepair.

I have respect for the girls who perform daily. To be able to hold their breath and stay in the for over a half hour. The spring temp is a constant 74 degrees but with the outfits they have to wear I bet they get cold.

Not many Photos this time. The mermaid show was hard to photograph and as mentioned there wasn't much to see in the park.

  1. I enjoyed seeing the little church and other buildings. It looks like it could use some sprucing up. I bet my granddaughter would have loved the mermaid show. Thanks for sharing this.

  3. I've never heard of Weeki Wachee-how sad that they let it go into such a state of disrepair. Hopefully someone will come along and give it the face lift it so badly needs.

I can't imagine holding my breath and performing under water....that's amazing....I would imagine they do get mighty gold at that temperature.

  4. This is amazing but I thought their was a tube for the mermaids to go to so they could get some air to continue breathing that long underwater. I saw it on a movie one time. I've never heard of Weeki Wachee either. Thank You Linda for yet another great read.
