Irish Soda Bread

This is an old recipe from a cooking board. I never made it because I can buy Irish Soda Bread back in NY in any local grocery store. Not so in Northern Florida.

Ingredients:

2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons caraway seed (didn't use)
3 Tablespoons Crisco
1 cup buttermilk
2/3 cup raisins
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons butter

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a saucepan, cover raisins with water. Bring to a boil, drain and set aside for later.
Combine dry ingredients, cut in Crisco with a fork.
Add raisins, toss to coat with flour.
Add buttermilk a little at a time to make a soft dough.
Turn out onto a floured board-knead a few times to smooth.
Form into about a 6” round dome and place on a greased or parchment lined sheet.
Cut a large cross (X) into the top of the bread.
Melt 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 1/2 tablespoon butter
Brush the bread with the sugar/butter mixture.
Bake 45 minutes until well browned.

  1. That looks great Linda! I've never made Irish Soda Bread.......I have NO idea why. You know me and bread making.

It sounds like you made Leda a very happy lady with this new-to-her treat. I'd be happy to munch on a slice of this myself. :)

  4. No Myra, it's moist when it comes out of the oven and when I took some to Polly a few days later it seemed ok. It tastes great toasted also.

Dottie- Leda is 96 years old and I hope if I get that age that someone will bring me goodies!

Carol- this bread would be easy for you to make!

  5. I have a recipe similar to this one but it uses an egg and 4 T Butter. It is not authentic which is no sugar and eggs but it is really good. Sanford loves it. I like to serve it with spun honey butter warm from the oven.

  6. Irish Soda Bread

    4-41/2 c flour
    2 T sugar
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon soda
    4 T butter
    1 Cup raisins or currants
    1 large egg, lightly beaten
    1 3/4 cup buttermilk

    Preheat oven 425
Whisk flour sugar, salt and BP in large bowl.
Cut in butter with pastry cutter, knives or clean fingers
Made a well in the flour and add the egg and Buttermilk Mix with a wooden spoon until batter is too stiff to stir. Then add a bit of flour to your hands and gently knead in bowl until a rough ball forms. Add more flour if dough is too stick but do not over knead! Transfer to a lightly floured surface and shape into a round loaf. the dough will be a little stiff and quite shaggy.
Transfer to a large cast iron skillet that has been sprayed. Put a cross in the top, dividing the top into 4 parts about an inch deep, Bake 35- to 45 min.

Mine came out a bit dark, should have taken it out earlier that 45, They said to put a bit of foil on top if it is getting dark. I used milk with a teaspoon of vinegar added because I was out of Buttermilk and it worked just fine. I got this from simplerecipes.com
