Black Bean Brownies
I love trying different type of recipes and when Gabe asked what I was making he sure wasn't into this one.
Black beans are one of my favorites and I knew I had to try this when I saw this posted on ms.enPlace. Michelle (ms. enPlace) hosts, See Ya in the Gumbo. Joe and Sue's recipe peeked my interest and I wanted to try it. It's a keeper!
I had a few cans of black beans but they were all 15 ounces. This recipe calls for 19 ounce can of black beans. I finally found a 19 ounce can at Walmart- La Costena whole black beans
Ingredients:
19 ounce can black bean, rinsed and drained
4 eggs
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup baking cocoa
pinch of salt
1/4 cup pecans- finely chopped and placed in a separate small bowl
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Joe and Sue used a 9 x 9 pan. I don't have one so used a 8 x 8. Cut the parchment paper to fit the pan and gave it a quick spray with Pam Baking Spray.
Added all the ingredients except the pecans into my food processor. You could also use a blender.
Pulse until smooth and pour batter into the prepared pan.
Sprinkle the batter with the chopped pecans.
Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Boy you would never know those brownies had black beans in them by looking at that photo. They just look like a nice fudgy brownie to me! If Gabe didn't know you were putting black beans in them, would he have tried them?

So do you think the beans added a different texture thing to the brownies? I'm sure you couldn't taste them. I've seen a lot of recipes for black bean brownies but never have tried them. Glad to hear you did and that it's a keeper-if you say they're good-then I'm willing to give them a go. :)
No, Gabe isn't into sweets at all and that's why I end up making things I like, especially down here. At home I can bake any type of cookie and the boys will still be knocking at the door.
DeleteThese brownies aren't as "fudgy" as the sweet potato ones but they sure are good.
I think Progresso carries 19 oz cans of beans. There are so many sections in the market that have beans. This recipe looks very tempting. I agree, you wouldn't know there were beans in there. Only problem with me making these, is I would eat them all, and believe me I eat much too much things I shouldn't. So, I will keep the recipe in mind, and if I have somewhere to go and can make something to bring, I shall try them. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteI have heard wonderful things about black bean brownies but we hadn't tried them yet. Looking at your photos of moist chewy brownies, I understand what all of the rave reviews are about! My daughter is gluten free and I have been thinking that it is about time we give black bean brownies a try. This is a recipe for this weekend. :)
ReplyDeleteWendy- I am a huge black bean fan. When I saw the recipe I knew I had to make them. Funny little story- I had to have physical therapy this past winter. The therapist knew I loved to bake and kept telling me how much he loved chocolate. I brought him the brownies BUT I didn't tell him right away that they contained black beans,( made sure he wasn't allergic to anything before I gave them to him). He told me they were great and would I make more. I told him they contained black beans and he said NO WAY!

Linda, decades ago I spent a year in Guatemala where (amongst other things) I fell in love with black beans. They are the only bean I like. Because I am used to them savory (with garlic and onion), I resisted the idea of black beans in baking, but now I have heard too many people say how wonderful black bean brownies are without giving them a try! I will let you know how it goes. :)
DeleteI made some black bean brownies once for my fellow teachers and didn't tell them what it was until after they'd gone on and on about how delicious they were - they were shocked and EVERYONE wanted the recipe!
