Amsler Apple- Pie Cake

I originally made this recipe 11/7/96 and noted that it was very, very good. It's from Newsday,  a local NY paper. Guess our taste buds are still intact nineteen years later. It's delicious!! May not be the prettiest dessert on the table but I bet once you get a taste there won't be any left.

The clipping was in one of my magazines. I'm sorting them out and ready to pass on to anyone who loves to cook as much as I do. I don't have family to pass my cookbooks and magazines. Looking for someone to love my collection as much as I do.

Ingredients:

1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup butter- softened
1 egg
2 tablespoon boiling water
2 1/2 cups apples, peeled and cut into small cubes
1/4 cup chopped nut ( optional)

Directions;

Mix together all the ingredients in a large bowl except the apples.

When batter is smooth, fold in the apples. The batter will be stiff.

Pour batter into a prepared 9 inch buttered pie plate and bake in a 350 degree oven for 40- 50 minutes.

Serve with whipped cream or sprinkle powdered sugar on top.

  2. This looks and sounds so good. I am like Gabriela.....like only the oldies can be! I have so many old recipes I would never ever throw out. Linda, I love your plate and also the way you put the original recipe with it. What a wonderful way to show where it came from. I used to go through all my Taste of Home Magazines and save the ones I wanted to keep. Sad to say I had to get rid of them when I moved, but I do have a collection of old yellowed favorites in my file. These days everything is online to look up, but nothing can top the tried and true way of finding great recipes. Going to share this one with someone I know will love it. So glad you are back, you were missed.

  3. This kind of reminds me of the Swedish Apple Pie Robin used to make once in a while. Cakes like this are so good and so easy. Yours looks delicious-and so easy too-gotta love that! Sure wish I could reach in and have a sample-that's my kind of cake.

Don't you love running across tried and true old recipes you cut out of newspapers, magazines and such and made notes like that on? I have binders full of clippings that I love pouring through...and dare I say a HUGE stack more to be put into binders.

What can I say...I love love LOVE collecting recipes. It was passed on to me from my Mom and is an activity that I cherish. I have her binder and recipe boxes with old recipes clipped and taped on index cards....they're all treasures to me.

The computer is nice-recipes are a click away-but having a collection you can pick up and look through beats a computer any day for me.

  4. It's a disease I tell ya. But a good one! I can proudly say i'm addicted to collecting recipes and the older the better in most cases. Maybe vintage would be a better way of saying it... That cake is a perfect winter snack and apples are good for you right? Have a few here now and I know this cake wouldn't last that long in this house. have the recipe copied. I too Love the plate, it's beautiful.

    Thanks for another Keeper Linda

  8. What a lovely idea to want to find a home for your collection! Due to an estrangement, my father got rid of all my Mom's cookbooks, recipe cards and clippings that I had learned to cook from. Those were the things I wanted more than any other "stuff" I never forgave him for that! He didn't even pass them to someone, just tossed them. My girls will be able to split and share the collection I've aquired.

    1. That breaks my heart that all those beloved recipes were tossed.

I've given so many cookbooks away but cooking and especially older recipes aren't cherished like they use to be. It use to be you made something and if they person enjoyed it you gave them the recipe.

I try to do that with this blog. I don't have ads because it's all about the food and sharing something I love to do.

God didn't give me a large family to cook for so I cook and share with strangers and hope they enjoy some of the things I make.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  23. I've made this recipe numerous times since clipping it out of Newsday years ago. It is a coffee cake type dessert that you can whip up totally last minute using a spoon and bowl.
Instead of butter, I have always used canola oil and it turns out great. One family member is a very finicky eater and always loves it when I make this. For a fancier presentation, serve it warm with confectioners sugar sprinkled on top with a side scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can pop it in the oven while you're seated for dinner...it smells heavenly too!

  26. In all my cookbooks I always added little notes next to anything I made. Jan, I loved cook books and had a HUGE collection. We have to move and sell my beloved home so all my cookbooks are gone. I hope whoever I donated to will appreciate them, even with my little notes in them.
